The ADAS System in Your Car

Complete Diagnostic and Calibration Service

All newer vehicles have an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) installed. This system uses sensors to collect data while you’re driving that can be used to initiate the vehicle’s safety features to prevent an accident. There are four common sensors. The steering angle sensors detect the direction the steering wheel is turning, which impacts curve-adaptive headlights, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. The front-facing camera sensors are typically mounted near the rearview mirror to detect cars, pedestrians, and other obstructions in front of you. These sensors impact the adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking and add data to the lane departure and lane keeping systems. The forward radar sensors located in the front bumper or grille track the distance to objects in front of you and can adjust your following distance. Aside from adding more data to the adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, the forward radar sensors also initiate the forward collision warning. The rear radar sensors exist on the rear corners of your vehicle and track the distance of vehicles behind and beside you. Data from these sensors activate the blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic emergency braking. To ensure that the ADAS is working correctly, it requires professional calibration.

ADAS Calibration

A new and ever-growing field, ADAS calibration is the precise physical alignment, testing, and electronic aiming of sensors like forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking and more. Due to the nature of these sensors, it’s imperative that they be precisely aimed. A slight misalignment could have the sensor assessing the wrong area around the car, which can severely decrease the reaction time of the associated system. While all sensors are calibrated when the car is on the line, factors like accidents or repairs can cause misalignment. Since these sensors do not tell the driver when they’re no longer calibrated, if you notice a change in the associated systems, you should take your vehicle to a certified ADAS calibration professional, like Shepherd Automotive, to check these sensors and recalibrate, as necessary.
